Relevant Skills
Data Management and Interpretation
The management and interpretation of biological data was central to my undergraduate degree and my final year project, which looked at the impacts of Muntjac deer on the ecology of lowland ancient woodland. My current position requires me to collect, interpret and store biological data to demonstrate the appropriate management of Sites of Special Scientific Interest and other designated areas. I use Geographic Information Systems (Arcview GIS 3.3) extensively to record and analyse biological information and to produce detailed maps showing species and vegetation distribution.
The Ability to Work as Part of a Team
I have the confidence and initiative to work alone, but I am also an excellent team player in both a professional and personal capacity. My time spent in Uganda taught me the importance of working as part of a team in often difficult circumstances and adapting my working style to suit the needs of local colleagues. Partnership working and teamwork are central to my current position. As a key team member I am required to meet strict deadlines on projects such as community events and the production of management plans, where assistance and input from colleagues with differing fields of expertise is crucial.
Organisational Skills
I have recently completed a Postgraduate Certificate (May 2007) whilst working full time. This has required me to manage my time effectively in order to meet both professional and academic deadlines. My current position requires to me manage multiple time-bound projects, including teams of volunteers and contractors to ensure that habitat management work is carried out within deadlines specified by both project funders and regulatory bodies.
Interests and Leisure Pursuits
The recent completion of a postgraduate certificate in Responsible Tourism Management has allowed me to build on knowledge gained from my work experience in conservation, and from a previous position, implementing an Eco-tourism project in Uganda. Studying for the award has stimulated an ongoing interest in the complex relationships between rural communities in the developing world, tourism and wildlife conservation, and I am keen to undertake further post-graduate training in this area.
I have travelled and climbed extensively in the developing world including Africa, South America and Asia. I have recently returned (Sept) from a 5 week expedition as part of multi-national team climbing a 7000m peak in the Karokoram Mountains, Pakistan. I enjoy running and regularly participate in 10km and half marathon events. I have a passion for wildlife and the outdoors and am a keen hill-walker and birdwatcher.
