Elephant Research In The Okavango Delta, Botswana

Talks at Schools

We consider educational a vital component of conservation in our spare time we give talks and research sessions to school children. We are keen to form strong links with schools throughout the world. Teachers interested in learning more about elephants and using the research as a teaching forum please get in with Kate Evans.

I was very flattered to be asked to give a talk at Kimpton Church of England Primary School, by a teacher there who had seen one of the calendars at her dentist. I have to say I was a little nervous as to how to go about it, so I tried to remember what I was like as a child. I thought that I learnt best through seeing and doing. So after a talk full of photos and diagrams we did some of our own research in the woods outside. It was great fun and the kids really enjoyed it. I was very humbled when I received some thank you letters from the children and one even contained the precious words 'you have inspired me' I was very touched by this and feel very privileged to have played such an important part in a young child's life. I have returned every year since and everything we hold a competition. Below are some of the competion winners.

These talks have grown and I have returned to Kimpton and also spoken at other schools. I am very lucky to do what I do with the elephants; it is a small thing to try and educate the next generation about conservation, our world and our place in this world.

Elephant Dream Poem by Chelsea Wickenden (with a little help from her mum))

Through metal bars their faces stare,
    Strange faces with alarming hair.
They lick their tongues on lolly sticks,
    Peculiar creatures, full of tricks.

The Wild A Story by Chloe

I live in Africa and my name is Chloe.
Today I was going up to the well to fill up the water bucket,
when I suddenly saw something big and grey,
wriggling around in the bush, I slowly but quietly started to walk up to the bush.

    'Dear Kate,

Thank you for coming to our school and giving up your free time it really interested me and inspired me. It was nice adopting an elephant'

    'Dear Kate,
Thank you for coming to our school and telling Swan Class all about elephants. We were very interested in your information. We have adopted one of the elephants called Mafunyane. Are your monkeys still being cheeky?'

    'Dear Kate,
I really enjoyed your extremely interesting talk about elephants and the names of all the elephants and your camp at Botswana. I really would like to go to Botswana and I've learned to respect elephants a lot more than I did'
